Parmi les montagnes et les ruisseaux
Une forêt mystérieuse, au début de l’automne, est habitée du chant d’une rivière, des appels des oiseaux. Les feuilles tombées dessinent des éclats d’or sur les rochers bleus. Deux voyageurs fatigués y cheminent à pied : le peintre Meng Huang et l’écrivain Ma Jian. Finalement arrivés à une cabane comme après un long périple, ils mangent et trinquent – mais l’heure n’est pas aux réjouissances. Leurs regards sombres sont habités par des souvenirs de la Chine qu’ils ont quittée : la persécution, la résistance, et le sort réservé à celles et ceux qui se battent pour les droits de la personne. Alors que la forêt fait surgir en eux pensées déchirantes et considérations existentielles, ils discutent d’art. Pour ces artistes dont la vision du monde a été transformée par le massacre de la place Tian’anmen, c’est dans la création que l’on trouve une réponse à l’oppression et au mensonge. Among Mountains and Streams
A mysterious forest in early fall echoes with birdsong and the sound of a river. Fallen leaves speckle gold on the blue stones. Two weary travellers make their way on foot – the painter Meng Huang and writer Ma Jian. When, as if after a long journey, they finally reach a cabin, they eat and drink, but the mood is not one of contentment. Their gaze is dark, haunted by memories of the China they have fled: persecution, resistance and the treatment meted out to those who fight for human rights. With the forest arousing painful thoughts and existential considerations, they talk about art. For the two artists, whose world view has been upended by the Tiananmen Square massacre, creation offers an answer to oppression and lies. But what kind of life remains for the exiles?
