Join us for a roundtable dedicated to exploring the role of cinema in building social connections and fostering cultural exchange through translation.
Featuring director Alfonso Maiorana (Goddess of Slide: The Forgotten Story of Ellen McIlwaine), Catherine Viau, producer and Head of Film Programming at the FCMS, and Audrey Canalès, professor of audiovisual translation at the Université de Sherbrooke, this discussion will examine how cinema can serve as a powerful catalyst for community building and as a learning tool for translation.

The roundtable will be followed by a screening of Goddess of Slide: The Forgotten Story of Ellen McIlwaine by Alfonso Maiorana at 17:00 at La Maison du Cinéma.

About the film:
Goddess of Slide: The Forgotten Story of Ellen McIlwaine celebrates the legendary Canadian musician who fought to assert her right to play slide guitar – an instrument dominated by men in a world that is also largely male-dominated.

Alfonso Maiorana (DGC), is an award-winning Canadian filmmaker and cinematographer with over 30 years of experience in the film industry. He began his career in Montreal writing /directing music videos and independent short films. Some of his more personal projects that have had a successful festival run include; The Big World, which premiered at the Montreal International Film festival and Annabelle at the Sao Paulo International Film Festival. MAIORANA's distinctive visual style and storytelling in his films derive from his passion for real life stories. His rich cultural background, the love for the arts, and his connection to music play…

Audrey Canalès Membre du jury | Professeure adjointe | Université de Sherbrooke
Audrey Canalès is an Assistant Professor of Audiovisual Translation at the University of Sherbrooke, Canada, and a researcher at the CRIHN (Interdisciplinary Research Center on Digital Humanities). Her expertise lies in translation studies, particularly focusing on the role of translation in society, information technology, and visual arts. Her multidisciplinary background has led her to explore screen and stage translation processes through the lens of translation studies. Her research investigates the relationships between translation and contemporary narrative forms, including transmedia narratives, examining how they interact and influence each other in today's digital landscape.
