In the belief that cinema constitutes a medium for learning and opening up to other cultures, the Festival offers a selection of inspiring films from all over the world to students in Estrie schools.
Each screening is presented with a workshop or discussion moderated by cinematographic artisans or a cultural animator. In addition, for some films presented, teachers receive a pedagogical tool dealing with the main aspects of the film and offering multiple animations that can easily be done in class.
The Festival cinéma du monde de Sherbrooke offers three types of activities for schools. These activities are intended for students at all levels (preschool, elementary and secondary) and all levels (French, English, public or private schools):
Year-round activities
– J’aime le cinéma : these screenings are organized specifically for school groups in different venues. The screenings are always animated and give the opportunity to discover inspiring films, in particular about the discovery of the world, the environmental awareness, the social values or the artistic creation.
– Un cinéma à mon école : FCMS travels to schools and meets young students. We offer quality films to learn about cinema and the image. The films are adapted to the age of the children and the theme is agreed in advance with the teacher. The screening is followed by a discussion with a cinematographer. These screenings take place in a school room that is suitable for the activity in order to provide students with an optimal experience.
Activities during the Festival
– Matinées scolaires : this activity gives the opportunity to young people to discover emerging cinema from all over the world. The screenings are animated by a cinematographic professional or a cultural animator. These animations are an extension of the screening approaching the theme of the film to enhance the cinematic experience.

Pocket film Competition – School Tournament
Held each year by the FCMS since 2015, the Pocket Film Contest – School Tournament is a short-film competition open to all high school students from participating schools in Estrie. It is a great opportunity for young people to express their creativity through the art of cinematography, to actively learn about film-making, and to develop new talents and interests.
The participants have 6 weeks to make a video (fiction, documentary, animated, stop-motion, experimental) lasting between 1 and 4 minutes and pertaining to a predefined subject.
An in-house panel at each school selects three finalists for the Prix du public (People’s Choice award), including the school’s winning film, which becomes eligible for the Prix Meilleur film (Best Film award). The selected films will then represent their respective schools in the School Tournament. Relatives and friends, as well as the general public, can witness the creativity of the young filmmakers at a special screening event held during the Festival.
