2024 Competition

Each year, the Festival cinéma du monde de Sherbrooke bestows three Cercle d’or awards and the Prix Coup de cœur du public presented by Radio-Canada.

2024 winners

The Cercle d’or Best Feature Film – Fiction was awarded to Àma Gloria directed by Marie Amachoukeli
The Jury also made a special mention of the film Les Damnés ne pleurent pas by Fyzal Boulifa

The Cercle d’or Best Feature Film – Documentary, presented by TV5, was awarded to La Mère de tous les mensonges directed by Asmae El Moudir
The Jury also made a special mention of the film Les filles d’Olfa by Kaouther Ben Hania

P’TIT BOUDDHA by Jean-Sébastien Dutil was chosen as the winner of the Prix Pierre-Javaux – Meilleur court métrage de l’Estrie

This year, all the feature films presented during the Festival were elegible for Radio-Canada’s Prix Coup de cœur du public. Festivalgoers voted for Les filles d’Olfa by Kaouther Ben Hania as their favourite film.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Each year, the Festival’s programming committee submits 5 dramatic features and 5 documentary features for competition. A panel rewards one film chosen in each category.

Prizes awarded:
– Cercle d’or Meilleur long métrage de fiction (Best Dramatic Feature award)
– Cercle d’or Meilleur long métrage documentaire, presented by TV5 (Best Documentary Feature award)

REGIONAL COMPETITION

Following a call for short films from the region, a panel selects short films from Estrie to be presented during the Festival. Among this selection, the panel awards the Prix Pierre-Javaux – Meilleur court métrage de l’Estrie, and a grant.

Prizes awarded:
– Prix Pierre-Javaux – Meilleur court métrage de l’Estrie (Best short film of Estrie region)

PRIX COUP DE COEUR DU PUBLIC

The Prix Coup de cœur du public presented by Radio-Canada is voted on by festival goers. This award goes to the public’s favourite dramatic feature film.

International competition JURY

Pierre Curzi | Président

Pierre Curzi est un acteur qui joue dans plusieurs films marquants du cinéma québécois dont Les PlouffeMaria Chapdelaine (Gilles Carle), Le déclin de l’empire américain et Les invasions barbares (Denys Arcand). Il co-scénarise Pouvoir intime avec Yves Simoneau (nomination pour le meilleur scénario aux prix Génie de 1987) et participe à plusieurs séries à succès comme Les filles de CalebMarguerite Volant et Virginie. Il joue également dans plus de 30 productions théâtrales entre 1969 et 2006. Il a été président de l’Union des artistes pendant 10 ans et membre de la mythique troupe de théâtre Le Grand cirque ordinaire.

Sonia Bolduc

During her 25 years as a journalist at La Tribune, Sonia Bolduc has always been captivated by people – their relationship to each other and their life quests. This is an interest she still maintains as an author, a poet and as communications director at the Théâtre du Double signe. She passionately believes that the arts are a living place where people can meet both others as well as themselves. She thinks the arts are essential to understanding what lies both within us and surrounding us. The arts are a source of reflection, of questioning and offer answers and comfort when faced with life’s chaos.

Samuel Gagnon

Samuel started out as a film distributor for Aska Films where he spent 10 years distributing films by Imamura, Elia Suleiman, Wong Kar-Wai and many others. He then turned to production, producing Karim Hussein’s Ascension (Sitges – Best Film New Vision) and Claude Gagnon’s Revival Blues. Claude Gagnon’s Kamataki also won a Special Mention from the Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival. The film receives two Jutra nominations, including one for Best Director. He also produces short films by Denis Côté, Faouzi Bensaidi and Ève Saint-Louis. He is a member of ACE Producers.


 

Nathalie Plaat

Nathalie Plaat is a clinical psychologist, author, and columnist for Le Devoir newspaper. She also co-created Ciné-Moi, a Festival cinéma du monde de Sherbrooke activity that combines mental health and cinema. She is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the CERC at the Université de Sherbrooke. In 2023, Somme toute/Le Devoir published her book “Chroniques d’une main tendue – Courtepointes et autres récits de soi“. Faced with our modern-day psychological challenges, she invites us to move away from the standard pathological analysis of the human condition.

Johane Lelièvre | Jury Member - Public

Originally from Gaspésie, Johane Lelièvre has lived in Estrie for more than 20 years. Because of her role as a training advisor at the University of Sherbrooke, she enjoys meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures. Endowed with an artistic sensitivity that awakens emotions and reflection, this painter is also a great film buff. Her perception of the world transformed during her studies, when she discovered Kieslowski’s trilogy by chance. She also plays an extra in some productions, which allows her to experience the seventh art in other facets.

Oana Suteu Khintirian | Président

Oana Suteu Khintirian is a director and media artist of Romanian-Armenian origin who has lived in Montreal since 1995. She studied filmmaking and, over the last 20 years, her dance films and documentaries have won awards at numerous international festivals. In addition to her work as a director, Oana has created installations and immersive environments shown at museums and galleries around the world. Beyond Paper, her first feature-length documentary, won the Golden Circle for Best Feature-length documentary at the FCMS in 2023. She is currently pursuing a PhD at Université de Montréal.

Alexis Thibault

Alexis Thibault is a cinephile since childhood when the go-to family leisure activity was renting a movie. Graduated from a Master of research in mental health and from a Bachelors degree in Psychology, he’s passionate about intrigues that make him think and which explore human vulnerability. Caring for FCMS’s mission, he was an attendee, an event host, a promotor and a collaborator of its activities. Today, he works in the domain of science communication as BistroBrain organization’s general manager.

Myriam Leblond

Myriam Leblond has worked in television and film production for over twenty years. She has produced series with both a social and a cultural tangent, but her current passion is documentary. A true catalyst for change, Myriam Leblond is passionate about documenting the human condition so we can increase our capacity to reflect on the world.
