In the old quarter of Larache, in northern Morocco, Shlomo passes away, leaving behind a series of troubling signs that cast doubt on the certainty of his religious identity. Very quickly, those around him are confronted with an almost Kafkaesque dilemma: should he be laid to rest in the Jewish cemetery or the Muslim one?
Returning from Canada in the midst of the turmoil, his son David has only one goal: to give his father a dignified burial, at any cost. Imad, Shlomo’s childhood friend, carries his own invisible burden: through his negligence, he believes himself responsible for Shlomo’s death. Since then, the deceased man’s ghost has haunted him, calling on him to finally take responsibility—at least once—in order to make amends.
Through these two men, brought together by loyalty despite a life that has driven them apart, Enterrement en Sursis explores the invisible thread that binds human beings beyond time. The film is born of a desire for reconciliation—between the living and those they have lost, between a country and its memory.
This is a dramatic comedy shaped by a tender view of Morocco: that of narrow alleyways, deeply etched faces, intersecting languages, and a noisy, warm, light-filled world.
