Onenight, a new group of Syrian refugees arrive, on their way to Western Europe. One of them is Ali, acharismatic left-wing activist. Ababuo initially mocks him, but, the very next day, leaves Serbia with him,providing no explanation. Strahinya sets off along the Balkan migrant route for completely differentreasons than anyone else: for love. A re-imagining of the medieval Serbian epic poem BanovichStrahinya in which contemporary African migrants take the place of Serbian national heroes. Afin de pouvoir travailler et subvenir aux besoins de sa mère affaiblie, de sa soeur aînée soumise et de son petit frère encore aux couches, la fillette n’a d’autre choix que de se déguiser en garçon. Après avoir enfilé les vêtements de son frère Sulayman, décédé dans des circonstances nébuleuses, l’impétueuse Parvana se rend au marché. Forte des conseils et de l’amitié d’une ancienne camarade de classe qui a usé du même stratagème, elle entreprend de gagner suffisamment d’argent pour atteindre son objectif: obtenir la libération de son père en soudoyant un des gardiens de la prison où il est détenu. Mais quand des avions ennemis se mettent à survoler la ville, et qu’un cousin évacue de force sa mère, sa soeur et son frère, Parvana craint de ne pouvoir compléter sa mission. Pour se redonner du courage, elle s’inspire des péripéties d’un conte héroïque de son invention, dans lequel Sulayman affronte un maléfique roi éléphant au sommet d’une montagne.
