Each of the young students must decide if he will give into the temptation and choose the easier way of collaborating with the regime, or if he will subject himself to draconian surveillance by the secret police.

À la « Cañada Real », un quartier populaire aux limites de Madrid, la tension monte entre les résidents et les autorités locales alors que les terrains ont été vendus et que plusieurs familles se voient forcées de quitter leurs maisons improvisées. La matriarche de la famille, Augustina, habituellement joviale et pleine d’entrain, se transforme en une femme rongée par la peur. Le père de famille, David, un homme travaillant, qui fait vivre sa famille en recyclant des déchets, se bute au système bureaucratique. Pendant ce temps, les enfants de la famille, l’adolescent David Junior (16 ans), la belle-fille et mère adolescente Maria (17 ans) et le jeune Alejandro (9 ans) jonglent, à leur façon, avec leurs vies chamboulées.

In « La Cañada Real », a shanty town just outside Madrid, tensions between the officials and the inhabitants arise since the land has been sold and the different families are forced to leave their self-build homes. While mother of the house Augustina turns from a full of laughter mother into a woman tormented with fear, father David a hardworking scavenger tries to find a solution but fails the bureaucratic system. Meanwhile the younger members in the family, the adolescent Davíd Jr (16), daughter-in-law and teenage mother Maria (17) and the young Alejandro (9) struggle in their own way with their lives in between places.

Son obsession avec la distribution de son film, son besoin d’attention et ses idées de grandeurs, bien qu’un peu extrêmes et pathétiques, servent d’exemples afin de démontrer les efforts que nous faisons tous pour contrôler notre réalité, déjouer la mort et donner un peu de sens à notre vie.

Tzuri’s obsession with the distribution of his new film, his need for the whole world to watch it and his delusions of success, although perhaps slightly extreme and pathetic, serve to exemplify the great efforts we all go through to control reality, outwit death and to make some sense of the journey there.

Avec la menace de fermeture qui pèse sur leur école, les professeurs tentent de modeler les étudiants afin de plaire au parti communiste au pouvoir. Chaque étudiant doit alors choisir entre la voie facile et collaborer avec le régime, ou bien, être le sujet d’une surveillance constante de la part de la police secrète.
