Sylvie Van Brabant

Productrice, réalisatrice, directrice générale | Les productions du Rapide Blanc

Sylvie Van Brabant is at the head of Productions du Rapide-Blanc since 1984, a company she cofounded with Serge Giguère, with a very clear mission: to seize the reality of important and relevant topics. This independent production company has become a platform for social, political and artistic works that are pertinent, eloquent and poetic, daring to tackle controversial issues as well as give the public films with deep cultural and social values. Films that have garnered awards in Quebec, Canada and abroad but that have also confirmed her greatest commitment, to bring about change in our society.

She has coproduced as well as directed several features and one-hour documentaries with the National Film Board of Canada. Earth Keepers: A Survival Guide for a Planet in Peril, produced by Sylvie Van Brabant and Peter Wintonick, and Everest from within. Other co-productions with the NFB include Finding Macpherson, Driven By Dreams and Baby Business.

In 2014, she released the feature Anticosti: The hunt for extreme oil, directed by the world-renowned stage director Dominic Champagne (LOVE: The Beatles) and the short, The World of Adrien (selected at Hot Docs and AFI). She then released two features in 2015, Finding Macpherson, (Jutra Award, Best Quebec feature documentary 2015) directed by master documentarian Serge Giguère (Hot Docs Focus On, 2006 and winner of the Governor General Award in Visual and Media Arts, 2008) and The Sex Trade, directed by feminist filmmaker, Eve Lamont. Van Brabant strongly supports young filmmakers to create original work and in 2016 she released Perfect, Jérémie Battaglia’s first feature. In 2018, she released several shorts directed by first-time filmmakers and in 2019 she released HAK_MTL as well as A Wall Within by Catherine Veaux-Logeat and an international coproduction with Little Big Story (France), The World According to Amazon. In 2020 she released award winning IntoThe Light With Cité Mémoire and in 2021 she will be releasing three new documentaries. Nothing stops this passionate filmmaker.
