Julien Elie

Réalisateur

In 2002, Julien Elie made his first documentary on capital punishment in the US, followed by a medium-length film shot in East Africa the same year. He took a break from filmmaking for about 15 years, then returned in 2018 with his film Soleils noirs. This epic tale set amid the wave of violence sweeping Mexico won some fifteen awards (CPH DOX, FICUNAM, Hamburg Film Festival, etc.) and was screened at around sixty festivals around the world. In 2023, La Garde blanche, a second feature film shot in Mexico, this time addresses the devastation of land by private companies. The film won awards in Canada, France, and Spain. Shifting Baselines, his latest film, had its world premiere at the Visions du réel festival (Nyon) in April 2025 and was then screened at Hot Docs (Toronto). The film received the Kaleidoscope Grand Jury Prize at DOC NYC (New York) and the Green Award at the renowned Dokusfest in Kosovo. The film was released in Canada in 2025 and will be distributed in Mexico and France in 2026, among other countries.
