Rico is a 9-year-old boy whose life is abruptly turned upside down when his mother Erzulie and him are forced to flee their home in Haiti. Migrating to safety in a small rural town in Quebec, mother and son try their best to get accustomed to their new world, but since their arrival Erzulie, still grappling with her trauma, is becoming distant from Rico. So, the boy does what many children do, and conjures up imaginary friend Kana, from a Haitian myth, who becomes his guide to figuring out the alien world he’s found himself in.
