Junichiro Tanizaki’s literary essay In Praise of Shadows, light and dark, and the origins of photography and cinema are among the strands interwoven in this “cinematic meditation” in three chapters. Fleeting shadows ebb and flow in a glistening half-light, an enchanted dreamlike state that reflects on our place in the world, the passage of time, and the very essence of life and its fragility.

Catherine Martin Cinéaste | Les Films de l'Autre
Catherine Martin was born in Quebec. After studying visual arts at college, she went on to study film and photography at Concordia University in Montreal. Her fiction and documentary films have been shown at numerous international festivals (Berlin, Toronto, Nyon, Karlovy Vary, etc.) and have won awards in Quebec, Canada and abroad. Three of them were among the TIFF's Top Ten in the year of their release. Catherine Martin writes and directs all her films. Since 2017, she has been producing documentary essays for which she does the camera, sound and editing.
