Que ressent un ultramarathonien lorsqu’il court 160 kilomètres en 24 heures? Sébastien Roulier a représenté le Canada dans des championnats mondiaux pour ce type de course d’endurance. Pour lui, la course est un art, comme la peinture : le coureur est un peintre dont le mouvement est la création. Le film reprend cette belle analogie pour décrire l’intériorité du coureur grâce à des peintures effectuées sur de la pellicule cinématographique 16mm.

What does an ultramarathon runner feel when running 160 kilometers in 24 hours? Sébastien Roulier has represented Canada in world championships for this type of endurance race. For him, running is an art, much like painting: the runner is a painter whose movement is the creation. The film takes up this beautiful analogy to describe the runner’s inner experience through paintings made on 16mm cinematic film.

Chiennes de faïence
In the presence of the film crew Chiennes de faïence is a Canadian feature film written and directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Marie-Hélène Panisset. In a dramatic comedy genre, this film relates the emerging friendship between a native Quebecois and atheist woman, and another from immigrant background and Muslim faith. One is a fan of cosmetic surgery and displays an assumed sexuality, the other wears a full veil (niqab) which only reveals her eyes. The two women meet when they enter an elevator and it breaks down. Suspicious of each other at first, they will have no choice but to learn to communicate and join forces to get out of this tricky situation. Along the way they will have ended up developing real empathy for each other, coming together in the fact of being women and being subject to the dictates of patriarchy. The elevator metaphor speaks of the imprisonment of women’s bodies in all cultures and the need for solidarity among them to advance their rights throughout the world. The tone of the film is humorous: it allows serious subjects to be addressed in an affable manner, attracting the widest possible audience. It also offers the potential to attract the Muslim community who rarely see themselves portrayed in a favorable light in cinema, in addition to promoting dialogue between cultures.
La petite et le vieux
Années 80, Québec. Elle se nomme Hélène, mais se fait appeler Jo parce qu’elle veut être comme Joséphine La Petite Mousquetaire, son héroïne de dessins animés préférés. Jo n’a que dix ans, trois sœurs, un père très occupé à être malheureux et une mère compréhensive, mais stricte. Elle vit dans un quartier populaire peuplé de gens souvent colorés dont le plus attachant est son nouveau voisin, Monsieur Roger, un vieil homme bourru qui cache un cœur tendre. Avec son âme romantique et un imaginaire avide de grands drames, Jo aimerait aussi réaliser de grands exploits. Un jour, elle se donne la mission de sauver son père du travail et du malheur. Jo is only ten years old, with three sisters, a very busy and troubled father and an understanding but strict mother. She lives in Limoilou, a blue-collar neighbourhood with a very diverse population, the most endearing of whom is her new neighbour, Monsieur Roger, a prickly old man who works hard at hiding his big old heart. A romantic soul with a voracious appetite for drama, Jo dreams of doing great things. One day, she decides to make it her mission to save her father from his work and his misery.
