2019 Competition

International competition

The panel rewards one dramatic feature and one documentary feature chosen among five films submitted for competition in each category. The winning film will receive respectively the Cercle d’or Meilleur long métrage de fiction (Best Dramatic Feature award) and the Cercle d’or Meilleur long métrage documentaire (Best Documentary Feature award), sponsored by TV5. The films submitted for competition are selected by the Festival’s programming committee.

Marie Tifo
President of the jury

Marie Tifo has enjoyed a string of successes in movies, on stage and in television for more than forty years. Cast in some thirty feature films since her debut, she delivered a particularly unforgettable performance in F. Mankiewicz’s Good Riddance. She has trodden the boards of all major theatres in Québec, playing all the great roles from Molière to Michel Marc Bouchard. She further left her mark on the imagination of TV viewers with her rendering of Jacqueline O’Hara in the series O’.

Angèle Séguin

Angèle Séguin is a playwright, stage director, and lecturer, as well as a founding member and the art director of the Théâtre des Petites Lanternes in Sherbrooke. Besides her work in the Eastern Townships, she has taken part in a number of artistic collaborations and co-productions at the national and international levels in New Brunswick. Her stage productions have earned her several awards.

Emmanuelle Laroche

A graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, Emmanuelle Laroche divides her time between theatre and television. After working regionally with the Théâtre du Double signe, she is currently acting in the children’s play Histoire à Plumes et à Poils at the Petit Théâtre de Sherbrooke. She has also distinguished herself as an acting coach and stage director.

Jean Boivin

A discerning cinephile, Jean Boivin is a full professor of music history at the Université de Sherbrooke. He has written a book on the French composer Olivier Messiaen (1995) as well as numerous articles on the history of musical and cultural modernity in Québec. He is editor-in-chief of the magazine Cahiers de la Société québécoise de recherche en musique.

Alexandre Leclerc

Alexandre Leclerc

Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in History at the Université de Sherbrooke, Alexandre Leclerc is also a student member of the Laboratoire d’histoire et de patrimoine de Montréal. He sees each film as a book offering insight into different eras and cultures. Constantly on the lookout for cinematic trends, he makes a point of keeping up with the various film festivals and celebrations each year.

Regional competition

As part of its annual programming, the FCMS hosts a special screening of several short films produced in the Eastern Townships and shortlisted by the selection panel. The panel then bestows on the winning entry the Cercle d’or Meilleur court métrage de l’Estrie (Best Eastern Townships Short award) – sponsored by La Fabrique culturelle – as well as a grant.

Ève Lamont

Ève Lamont is a free spirit who dives into the core of social realities too often ignored. Ever since her first documentary, Des Squatteureuses, she has engaged in a committed and socially-responsible form of cinema. She has written and directed several features, including Squat!, The Fight for True Farming, The Fallacy, The Sex Trade and Neighborhood Utopia..

Pascale Rousseau

A trained graphic designer, Pascale Rousseau has been producing and directing videos at the Université de Sherbrooke for close to a decade. Known for her creativity, her team spirit and her keen eye, she likes to approach her projects from thoroughly unexpected angles. She also fulfills her need to create through dance, the visual arts and event organizing.

Public award Radio-Canada

A Public Award – Radio-Canada is also awarded by the festival-goers among the feature films.

Pocket film Competition – School Tournament

The Tournoi des écoles (School Tournament) is a short-short contest open to all high school students from participating schools in Sherbrooke.

This friendly competition is a great opportunity for young people to express their creativity through the art of cinematography, to actively learn about film-making, and to develop new talents and interests.
