The OFF Festival cinéma du monde de Sherbrooke is launched!

In parallel of its fourth edition, which will be held from April 4 to 9, the FCMS will present two screenings in the presence of directors and guests on 27 January and 23 February 2017, in collaboration with La Salle Le Tremplin.

Le viel indien

Environment, poetry and history

The director Kanatakhatsus Meunier will be present during the screening to answer the questions of the public.

It will also be preceded by two slammers from the region, the poet Frank Poule and François Danis, who will offer texts inspired by the Mount Orford.

Le viel indien (Orford Old Indian) is an independent documentary to honour mount Orford, its history, its ecosystems, its pioneers and Alfred Desrochers’ poetry, recited by his daughter, Clémence DesRochers.

Discover how, in 1938, doctor Bowen from Magog collected $25 000 from 27 estrian municipalities to constitute a fund to purchase lands that will become the Mount Orford National Park. This documentary will bring up a poetic and historic contribution to the collective debate surrounding the development of public lands.

This movie will be presented January 26th, 7:00 PM, at La Salle Le Tremplin.

Waseskun

Nominated at the Canadian Screen Awards 2017

Premiere in Eastern Townshipps, in presence of the director Steve Patry

A detention center without bars and fences? This out-of-the-norms place awaits detainees from First Nations who stay there to facilitate their social reintegration. At the Waseskun Healing Center, men with troubled and violent pasts follow a treatment plan based on Amerindian philosophy. Between group talks, mediation and hockey games, they reveal themselves without embellishing the truth about their reality of humans who have been hurt and had hurt others in turn.

Named after the center, the documentary Waseskun, by the director Steve Patry, captures the daily life of this unique alternative detention facility with an unprecedented intimacy. He will be present to answer questions at the end of the screening, a premiere in the Eastern Townships. This film, produced for the NFB by Nathalie Cloutier and Denis McCready, is nominated at the Canadian Screen Awards 2017 for Ted Rogers Best Feature Length Documentary and Best Editing in a Feature Length Documentary.

Waseskun is a Cree word that can be translated as “just after a storm, when the dark clouds begin to part, the blue sky appears, and the first rays of sunlight shine through.”

This movie will be presented February 23th, 7:00 PM, at La Salle Le Tremplin.
